Keep Your Dog Safe During the Holidays
The holiday season is a time
for celebration. However, it is also a time when your
dog's safety may be at risk. Here are some potential
hazards to be aware of:
Table Scraps:
Feeding your dog table scraps is generally not a good idea.
Sudden changes in diet can lead to an upset stomach.
Bones:
Definitely do not give left over bones to your furry
friends. Bones from fish, poultry, and meat can be
very hazardous to your dog's health and cause problems such
as internal tearing, bleeding, vomiting, or choking.
Electrical Cords:
Dogs, especially puppies who are teething, may be tempted to
chew on cords. It is best to keep cords away from dogs
and always unplug lights when dogs are unsupervised.
Chocolate: Chocolate
contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs.
Unsweetened baking chocolate has a higher dose of the toxin
than milk chocolate, but milk chocolate can be potentially
dangerous too. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include
nervousness, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Plants: Ask your
vet about specific holiday plants as some may be poisonous
to dogs.
Holiday Decorations: Secure
the tree to prevent your dog from knocking it over.
Ornaments, tinsel & ribbon should be kept out of reach as
consumption of these items can lead to serious intestinal
problems.
Some of these tips may seem
to be common sense, but just to be safe, keep a close eye on
all your pets this holiday season!
-For all issues regarding
your dog's health, consult your veterinarian.
