Hurricane Preparation: Tips for Dog Owners
Hurricane
season is upon us once again and unfortunately, forecasters
are predicting a very active season. It is important for
dog owners to have a plan well in advance of a hurricane
watch because being prepared is key to surviving a storm.
If you are
not going to evacuate, make sure your home is safe and
secure. If you are located in an evacuation zone, never
leave your pets at home alone! You have several options:
-
Make
arrangements to stay with family or friends in a secure
area.
-
Stay at
a pet-friendly hotel. Make a list now and contact them
about their policies.
-
Board
your dog at a kennel.
-
Evacuate to a pet-friendly hurricane shelter. Space is
limited and shelters may require proof of current
vaccinations and other documents. Pre-registration is
encouraged. If you are located in Broward County,
contact the Humane Society at 954-989-3977.
Don’t
forget your dog when gathering your hurricane supplies. Dog
survival kits should include:
2 week supply of food and bottled water
Bowls for food and water
Nylon collar and leash
Up-to-date ID & rabies license tags
2 month supply of medications
Blankets
Toys
Manual can opener if applicable
Plastic bags for waste removal
Recent pictures of your pets
Travel crates
Litter box & litter for cats
First aid pet supplies
